Looking for a Healthy Start Community Doula?

Since 2021, Simply Healthcare, Sunshine Health, and March of Dimes have awarded funding to Capital Area Healthy Start to train Doulas. This doula workforce development project was also in collaboration with the Doula Network, Indian River Healthy Start Coalition, and Birth, Education, Advocacy & Mentorship (BEAM).

This partnership was established to increase the number of doulas in our local community because of their many benefits for both mother and baby. Research has shown that women who are supported by a doula during labor and childbirth are less likely to have a baby who is born too small or too soon, and more likely to have a shorter labor, and feel satisfied with their birthing experience.

How Do I Apply for A Scholarship to Become a Community Doula?

When Will I Find Out if I Receive the Community Doula Training Scholarship?

After an individual applies to the online application, they must attend a one-hour mandatory information session on Zoom before scheduling an interview.

Mandatory information sessions will be held:

  • Monday, June 24th ─ 6:00 pm
  • Wednesday, June 26th ─ 1:00 pm
  • Thursday, June 27th ─ 6:00 pm

Interviews will be held July 8th to July 19th.  Decisions on who will receive scholarships will be announced on July 26th.

If I Get Accepted, When Will the Doula Training Course Begin? How Long Will It Last?

The scholarship completely covers a comprehensive 3-day course, a level 2 background screen, and CPR training. This course is scheduled for August 23rd – August 25th. Attendance is mandatory for all 3 days.

Where will the training be located?

The location of the community Doula training will be discussed at the mandatory informational session via Zoom. Links will be posted closer to the dates.

What does the training consist of? Will I become a fully certified doula after taking this course?

Yes, you will become a fully certified Doula. This scholarship covers a comprehensive 3-day course, a level 2 background screen, and CPR training, which allows you to be certified as a doula. However, this scholarship does NOT cover continued education, and doulas will need to complete continuing education to keep their certification.
