We are proud to serve women and babies in Leon and Wakulla counties. Throughout our area mothers need a variety of support and services to help ensure a healthy baby and safe pregnancy.
A recent success story comes from one of our dedicated and talented care coordinators working with a mother of three in Leon County.
The 30 year old mother enrolled her one month old baby boy into our Healthy Start program after being satisfied with services with two of her other kids. For a couple of months, this mom was struggling to pay her bills, save for a new car and also be a caregiver to her sickly mother.
As her baby boy got older (now eight months old), she cannot afford child care services and the baby is struggling with some health and safety issues.
During the initial client assessment, mom reported milk always comes out of her son’s nose and she is scared to lay him down sometimes. Immediately mom was advised to seek care from their pediatrician. Mom then reported that her son has acid reflux. During a face-to-face visit with the mom and her son, the Healthy Start care coordinator witnessed the baby spitting up his milk and milk coming from his nose.
Our care coordinator educated the mom and showed her how to burp the baby and for how long.
The mother realized the baby needed to be burped longer due to his acid reflux and now feels comfortable to lay her baby down after his feeding and burping.
With the support of Healthy Start, she was not only provided with health and safety tips, but also housing resources, diapers, baby clothing, child care referral and accessories that helped save for a new car, catch up on her bills and balance being a mom.
