As an affiliate of The Birthing Project USA (BPUSA), Sister Friends Tallahassee is a FREE and voluntary program that connects pregnant women to dedicated and trained female community volunteers in order to encourage healthy pregnancies by providing support to women during their pregnancy and following their birth.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to fill the role of a Sister Friend. We are also recruiting Little Sisters for the program. You can find more information about participating in Sister Friends below.

Sister Friend Volunteer Description

The Sister Friends are volunteers who provide support to their Little Sisters during the pregnancy and throughout baby’s 1st year of life. Support may include assessing Little Sister’s needs, helping to make sure she attends medical appointments and connecting the Little Sister with community resources if needed. Most importantly, Sister Friends become an important part in the lives of their Little Sisters to help them have a healthy pregnancy and in supporting them in the first year of their baby’s life. 

Sister Friends’ time commitment is a minimum of 10 hours per month for up to 18 months.

Enrollment of Volunteers (Sister Friends):

  • Apply as a Sister Friends volunteer and be accepted as a volunteer
  • Pass a Level two background check
  • Participate in Sister Friends program orientation
  • Participate in Little Sister-Sister Friend match-up events
  • Serve as the Sister Friend to one Little Sister during their pregnancy up until their baby reaches their 1st birthday
  • Agree to attend Sister Friends trainings and work with the Sister Friends Program Coordinator
  • Agree to participate in Sister Friends events (example: Baby Showers)

Expectations of Volunteers (Sister Friends):

  • Interact with your Little Sister at least twice a month or more frequently if needed or desired
  • Makes sure your Little Sister has a prenatal care provider and keep logs of your Little Sister’s and her baby’s medical appointments
  • Provide your Little Sister with information on local resources as needed
  • Work with your Little Sister to help her meet her program expectations
  • Participate in Sister Friends program trainings which take place about once a month
  • Participate in Little Sister Baby Showers as they occur
  • Communicate with the Sister Friends Program Coordinator as needed
  • Notify your Little Sister and the Sister Friends Program Coordinator if your phone number or address changes
  • Notify the Sister Friends Program Coordinator if you are unsure of how to help your Little Sister 
  • Be responsive to your Little Sister and the Program Coordinator

To be eligible for enrollment all you need to do is:

  • Be pregnant at the time of enrollment
  • Accept the Sister Friends Tallahassee Birthing Project “Sister Friend” program
  • Be willing to share your appointment dates and times with your volunteer Sister Friend

Expectations of the Little Sister:

  • Make sure you have a prenatal provider
  • Comply with prenatal appointments and instructions
  • Attend prenatal and childbirth preparation classes
  • Avoid or decrease smoking and alcohol
  • Utilize necessary support services
  • Communicate with your “Big Sister” regularly, at a minimum weekly
  • Develop a birth plan
  • Develop a Family Planning Plan for birth spacing
  • Allow “Big Sister” to witness the birth of the baby
  • Get baby immunized on schedule
  • Take your baby for a well-baby check-up regularly
  • Notify us if your phone number or address changes
  • Share all your prenatal appointments and your baby’s appointments with your “Big Sister” so that she can help you keep track of them

*All information shared with your “Big Sister” and the Program Manager will be kept confidential. All staff and volunteers are expected to comply with HIPPA regulations.
